New Season, New Seasonals

As we inch into fall, we’re still enjoying the last of the summer harvest. One of our favorite end of season crops is new potatoes. We think of potatoes as being a year ‘round crop, and due to modern storage, they mostly are with the exception of New Potatoes, which are sold right after they’re harvested August through October.

New Potatoes are freshly harvested small potatoes of any variety. Their skin is so thin and tender you don’t need to peel them. Compared to mature potatoes, they are slightly sweeter in flavor and have a creamier texture.

Our newest seasonal is Truffle Potato. It’s inspired by both New Potatoes and the famous Roman pie, Pizza con Patate. For anyone who has ever visited Rome and seen the pizza al taglio slices to go and tried one with potatoes, you know what we’re talking about. We start with tender, new potatoes, thinly sliced, and roast them. Layered over mozzarella and an olive oil base, the new potatoes crisp at the edges while in the pizza oven but remain tender in the center. The finishing touch is a sprinkle of truffle salt that adds an irresistible aroma and flavor.

Our other seasonal, Prosciutto Fig Primo, takes cues from luscious late-season figs, which are bountiful right now. Fresh, ripe figs are great in savory dishes. Any guesses what our favorite preparation is? Right you are! Our Prosciutto Fig Primo takes ripe, jammy figs and pairs them with La Quercia’s prosciutto, the celebrated artisanal producer in Iowa and one of the best prosciuttos you can find. Fresh, creamy mozzarella and olive oil form the base for this subtly sweet and delicately salty tango of two of our favorite toppings.

And for dessert, our seasonal gelato is Marionberry Vanilla Swirl. In August and early September, along the sides of roads and fields, marionberries are ripe for the picking throughout the Pacific Northwest. Gelatiamo purchases baskets of handpicked, juicy berries from a farm in Oregon for their Marionberry Gelato. This bright, lively gelato is then swirled with a custardy gelato loaded with rich vanilla bean flavor. The result is a silky smooth blend of sweet cream and tart berries.

Enjoy!
