Free Slice Leap Day

We’ve been getting ahead of ourselves! It’s time to take a pause — a bonus day — to let the planet catch up with our slightly overeager calendar. To celebrate the surplus, also known as Leap Day, Pagliacci is giving away lunchtime slices (two per customer) at all Pagliacci locations (excluding UW locations and Valley) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.  

Not that you need a historical primer, but we did — hey, this only happens roughly once every four years! Here’s what we learned: Leap year was established by Julius Caesar more than two millennia ago. A trip around the sun on our precious planet actually takes 365 and 1/4 days. Caesar, who claimed to be as constant as the Northern Star, was informed by a Greek astronomer that the calendar was slightly askew. To keep the calendar year and the solar year aligned, he added a leap day once every four years. He almost had it right. As instruments of measure improved, further refinements were needed! In the late 16th century, an Italian doctor and astronomer informed Pope Gregory XIII that the Earth’s cycle was ever so slightly shorter than 365 and 1/4 days. So the pope introduced the Gregorian calendar in 1582, which refined the leap year rule to take away the occasional leap day by instituting this head scratcher: years divisible by 100 are only leap years if they’re also divisible by 400. That did it.  

What all those historical machinations to bring order and constancy to our calendar really mean is this: Free pizza. For you. At Pagliacci.
