π = $3.14

Pi Day is nearly upon us—but don’t worry if numbers aren’t your forte. At Pagliacci, the math on March 14 is easy: order one 11” pizza, and get a second 11” pizza for just $3.14.
Pi Day, the annual tribute to that famous constant, also marks Albert Einstein’s birthday — could there be a better match? It’s the day people flock to their favorite edible homonyms (aka tasty round things). We’re convinced pizza is the biggest draw. Judging by how busy we are on March 14, Seattle seems to agree!
Without pi — an irrational and transcendental marvel — we couldn’t figure out the area of our pizzas. Pi stretches past a trillion digits, but we’ll spare you the hefty math. To gauge the area of an 11-inch pie, multiply π (3.14) by the radius squared—just over 95 square inches of deliciousness. No calculator needed to enjoy our $3.14 deal!

We started our annual Pi Day celebration in Seattle in 2014. A year earlier, Pagliacci co-owner Matt Galvin had delivered several pizzas to his son’s math class for Pi Day. The thank-you cards he received suggested a $3.14 pizza special — and so we made it happen. Eleven years later, it’s still going strong.
Though Pi Day is often treated like a culinary holiday, it actually began in 1988 at San Francisco’s Exploratorium, thanks to physicist Larry Shaw — fondly dubbed the “Prince of Pi.” He placed a small brass marker called “The Interdimensional Rotator,” ringed by the first 100 digits of Pi, then invited enthusiasts to circle it three and one-seventh times, chanting Pi’s endless digits and singing “Happy Birthday” to Einstein. That playful nod to pi’s mysteries took on a life of its own worldwide. Shaw marveled at its spread, once saying, “Ours is a mystery religion. Just like others, we circumambulate the things we respect.”

Whether you love math or love to hate it, raise a slice to the circular, transcendent wonder of pizza this Pi Day. Our special offer — buy one 11” pizza, get a second 11” pizza for $3.14 — is available for delivery or pick-up on March 14.
